Valve disease is a common problem in our ageing population and up to one third of hospital admissions with heart failure are secondary to underlying valve disease. Cases are frequently complicated by co-morbidity and require careful liaison between primary and secondary care. Transcatheter therapies are now available and can help to treat patients unsuitable for surgery. This presentation on heart failure due to valve disease was given by Dr Jim Newton, Consultant cardiologist in Oxford, to a group of local GPs training in cardiology on the 30th January 2013 and outlines the background before reviewing several cases demonstrating the diagnostic and management challenges involved.
